CES 2017: What's in store for Chinese Products now that Trump is President

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is going on right now, and like in previous years, Chinese innovations garner a great deal of attention. However, due to Donald Trump's "One China" categorizations, bullet points in his trade plan, and today's Twitter War between Trump and China (via Xinhua) the status of Chinese products in the American marketis up for speculation. Will goods still be cheap? American's have become accustomed to low cost tech products imported from China, and the atmostphere on the CES show floor is palpable.

CES 2017: What's in store for Chinese Products now that Trump is President

Trump's trade plan has 3 points which challenge the current ease of Chinese distribution in the United States:
* Instruct the Treasury Secretary to label China a currency manipulator.
* Instruct the U.S. Trade Representative to bring trade cases against China, both in this country and at the WTO. China's unfair subsidy behavior is prohibited by the terms of its entrance to the WTO.
* Use every lawful presidential power to remedy trade disputes if China does not stop its illegal activities, including its theft of American trade secrets - including the application of tariffs consistent with Section 201 and 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

Trump even seems to be lumping Taiwan into this plan as part of "One China" which has angered some Chinese officials. Up until now, China has remained mostly silent about these challenges, however today Xinhua states ""The obsession with 'Twitter diplomacy' is undesirable." Late Monday, Trump tweeted, "China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won't help with North Korea. Nice!"

How does this affect the CES atmosphere?

There are many promising products that have garnered public attention and demand, but have yet to negotiate U.S. distribution. 2017 may prove to be challenging for these products (In American at least, their global demand may hold out just fine). For example, there is the anti-snore mat from newcomer Somnova who is not only hoping to secure distribution but is fundraising via kickstarter! And Note: They are already at $23k of their $10k goal, a testament to the demand for the product - but will they be able to maintain their pricing model once Trump's plan goes into place?

Another example is the InTao Smart Washer who still has yet to secure promising U.S. distribution despite the fact that there currently is no such U.S. brand equivalent (it's a pocket device when thrown into a tub of water, washes clothes anywhere - we don't have those in America). Will this be another technological innovation whose U.S. release is stalled this year?

Another example is the Longhao Computers. Longhao, who makes portable gaming computers and power pc's, has an office in California that they may be able to leverage. The technology involved in putting gaming level power into a small portable device has yet to be optimized by an American based company especially with the low-cost pricing model that Chinese tech is known for - a pricing model that may be coming to an end.

Get The Most out of CES 2017: Spotlight - Innovation Awards and The Henry Ford Museum

Get The Most out of CES 2017: Spotlight - Innovation Awards and The Henry Ford Museum

The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation Lounge in the Venetian opens soon for this years's Consumer Electronics Show. It'll prove to be a fun lounge with wi-fi and more, next to the media registration desk. A welcomed oasis, especially if my favorite hang out - The Grand Luxe - has their usual 1 hr. wait (hint: they never make me wait8-pI love you Grand Luxe ). So if you spot me there while walking by, I'm usually with Johnny - you can't miss us, long haired indian guy sitting next to the man with the glue-on horns coming out of his head - feel free to hop the fence and sit with us to avoid the line.

We reached out to Kristen Gallerneaux, the communication and information technology curator at The Henry Ford, who identified a correlation between the Google Tilt Brush, one of the this year's Innovation Awards honorees, and the IBM Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair. Kristen is offering tours of the Innovation Awards Exhibit tomorrow and the day after, and we wanted to get her opinion TODAY on how all is going so far!

She says. "As an information and technology curator for The Henry Ford, I am continuously researching the consumer technology landscape and staying abreast of the latest innovations, which CES is great for. Most new innovations are rooted in the technological advancements of the past, and it's my job to make those connections and determine which innovations have staying power. Many of the CES 2017 Innovation Award honorees have interesting connections to innovations of the past."

She adds about the museum, "Our technology collection includes the Apple 1, an early lineage of laptops and cell phones, as well as a variety of games and gaming systems including material recovered from the infamous "Atari Dig," an interesting story wrapped up in consumer trends. The games recovered from the Dig included “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” This dig was by many credited for the demise of the brand. These artifacts can be seen at The Henry Ford in Michigan through museum and private archive tours and are also available to anyone, anywhere, through the digital archives at www.thehenryford.org ."

Awwww yeah! The Atari Dig!! Keep in mind those old E.T. game cartridges were later ebayed for over $100k. Hmmm I wonder what I can get for my current 2600 cartridge collection? I embarrassingly still play them though, so ....

What to look for at CES 2017!

What to look for at CES 2017!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW?

CES is upon us again - we're only a few days away from new innovations in consumer electronics, led fashion, and more! Are you ready for it all?

For those that want a little background on the show, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the biggest trade show featuring the latest of the latest and the best of the best of Consumer Technology. Basically, it's all the hot stuff that you will want to buy online at Best Buy/Frye's/Amazon this coming year AS WELL AS all the new technological innovations that are predicted to change our lives.

CES news from the show floor can be overwhelming, but don't worry - while everyone else is busy talking about the same old Samsung & Apple products, Ready For The Red Carpet is here to highlight what's actually new, interesting, fun, and useful.

So, let's get an inside glimpse of CES 2017!

So what do the vendors actualy THINK of CES, and what kind of preparation for the show are exhibitors doing right now?

Blair Nicole of Media Moguls (who represents Pai Technology) says, ""The key to effective CES prep is starting early and monitoring trends. Staying actively engaged in Twitter conversations about CES, keeping an eye on competing technologies and following up with reporters you plan to meet at the event is key. Another thing that a lot of people overlook is to have FUN. This is [our] chance to showcase new technology to the world, so it should be exciting."

Pai is an ed tech company By parents FOR parents. In essence, they create tech that helps children grow, develop and play.

Where to find Pai at CES?
Kids & Technology Marketplace: Pai will be unveiling their CubeTastic and Ocean Pets products as well as PaiBand, which is a kids fitness and activity band, and PaiGO, an AR robot geared towards children.   Find them at: Sands, Halls A-D - Booth #44638

Nick Morey, Creative Director of Dynamo PR - who is representing Plume Labs at the show (a technology company that helps consumers understand their environment and monitor their exposure to air pollution to improve their health and wellbeing) says,
"Preparation for CES is always a challenging time for press, PRs and clients, and the key to a successful outcome is a level of understanding on all sides. Pitching to press has to come with the knowledge that they have extremely limited time (especially during holiday season), a barrage of pitches flooding their inbox (not all relevant) and won't always be able to commit to meets do to the surprising nature of the show, where a breaking news story could occur at any moment. As long as a PR has done their research, approached their targets in a concise and friendly manner, and ensure their clients are fully briefed on what to expect at the show ahead of time, to a high level of detail, then they can land in Vegas knowing they are prepped as possible." He adds, "While wearable tech, mobile and smart home seem to be the perennial features of any CES, we're certainly seeing the show as one of the stand out features of the automotive trade calendar, and we don't expect this to change any time soon. Although 2016 was cited by many as 'the year of VR', we will continue to see more practical applications of the technology appear, as people start to move past the initial novelty factor, and drilling into how it can be applied to have more of a lasting beneficial impact."

[[[ 2016 WAS the year of VR! See Anand's video about Merge VR's foray into 360 VR Music Videos here http://anandbhatt.skyrock.com/3287156904-360-VR-Music-Video-with-Merge-VR.html ]]]

Where to find Plume Labs at CES?
CES Unveiled: Mandalay Bay, South Pacific Ballroom, 5:00-8:30pm Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017
Eureka Park: Tech West, Sands Convention Center: Booth #50418, Thursday, Jan. 5 to Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017

Denise Hayman-Loa, CEO of Carii says,
"For the prep so far we we're fortunate to have won an award last year at CES and so we had some inkling of what to work towards. We have been cultivating our brand, product and name recognition through multiple outlets and in particular regular briefings with analysts over the course of multiple years, as well as taking in market and client feedback and adjusting our product accordingly. The process around CES itself has been more clear this year since we did it last year! It is such an amazing event - it's hard to express how significant it is unless you have been there and seen it for yourself!"

Carii is a Finalist for the 2017 Mobility Awards, as selected by AOTMP (the leader in telecom and mobile management best practices and industry standards for enterprises and vendors). Winners are selected by members of the press and analysts who cover mobile and wireless products and services, and will be announced at a sanctioned event on Thursday, January 5, 2017, from 5-7 pm in South Hall, Room S228.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE CES UPDATES AND NEWS!
